DDR4 or DDR5: which RAM does your computer need?
Your platform’s support should determine the choice between DDR4 and DDR5 first. A module from one generation is not compatible with the other generation’s slot. Check your exact system models before buying RAM.
Check the generation and physical format
Find the supported memory generation and module format in the motherboard or laptop manufacturer’s specifications. Do not confuse desktop and laptop modules. If the computer has soldered RAM or limited upgrade options, check whether memory can be added first.
DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. Moving to another DDR generation may require a new motherboard or complete platform. Compare the cost of adding memory to the current PC separately from moving to a new system.
Choose capacity around your tasks
Read the requirements of the games and applications you use. Allow for programs running at the same time and your working files. A video-editing project, graphics application and ordinary office tasks do not have identical requirements.
For an upgrade, check the installed modules, occupied slots and maximum supported capacity first. The manufacturer’s part number is useful alongside the module name because it identifies the precise variant.
Read module specifications correctly
| Specification | Why it needs checking |
|---|---|
| DDR generation | It must match motherboard support |
| Module format | DIMM and SO-DIMM are different physical formats |
| Capacity and module count | Compare total kit capacity and available slots |
| Speed and profiles | Supported modes also depend on the CPU and motherboard |
| Dimensions and cooling | Compare RAM height with the CPU cooler and case layout |
Confirm mixing and upgrade plans in advance
When adding RAM to an existing module, give the store both exact model names. Equal capacity or similar appearance does not make two modules identical. Do not assume that mixing different kits will produce a guaranteed result.
Check the motherboard’s memory support list and the recommended slot arrangement in its manual. A profile’s advertised maximum speed is not automatically guaranteed in every system. Verify compatibility using the actual components.
Frequently asked questions
Will DDR5 RAM work in a DDR4 motherboard?
No. DDR4 and DDR5 modules are not slot-compatible. Use the generation specified by the motherboard manufacturer.
Are two RAM modules with the same capacity necessarily identical?
No. Their generation, format, speed and exact model may differ. Compare all specifications and the manufacturer’s part number.
