Processor and motherboard compatibility
When choosing a processor, compare not only the CPU price but also the compatible motherboard, memory and cooling. Changing one part may require changing another.
Write down the full processor model
Intel Core, Core Ultra and AMD Ryzen are family names. Compare the processor’s full name and suffix with the manufacturer’s specifications. “i5”, “i7” or “Ryzen 7” alone is not enough to compare processors from different generations or intended uses.
For work applications, read the software requirements and relevant tests. Results can differ between games, video editing and other tasks. Do not choose a CPU only by core count or clock speed.
The socket is the starting check
First compare the CPU socket with the motherboard socket. Then open the support list for that exact motherboard. Find your processor and the BIOS version required for it.
Matching socket names alone do not prove complete compatibility. Check support for the specific motherboard, chipset and BIOS. If an update is needed, establish who will perform it and under what terms before ordering.
Compare the complete platform
| Item to check | Question before purchase |
|---|---|
| Motherboard | Is the exact CPU on its support list? |
| BIOS | Which version is required, and which is installed? |
| RAM | DDR4 or DDR5, and which module type? |
| Cooling | Is a cooler included with the CPU or selected separately? |
| Graphics | Does your task and CPU capability require a separate graphics card? |
Prepare the existing system details for an upgrade
For an older computer, provide the exact motherboard, BIOS, RAM type, power supply and case. Buying a new CPU without identifying the existing motherboard is not enough to check compatibility.
Compare the combined cost of the CPU, motherboard, required RAM and cooler. A cheaper processor does not automatically make the entire build cheaper. Confirm product prices and availability with PCLSHOP.
Frequently asked questions
Are Intel and AMD motherboards interchangeable?
Compatibility depends on the exact processor and motherboard models. Use the CPU’s required socket and the manufacturer’s support list; do not choose by brand name alone.
Do I need to check BIOS if the socket matches?
Yes. The support list may specify a particular minimum BIOS version. Check whether an update is needed in advance.
